Community Energy Conference on SSI!

Dear supporters & friends

Happy New Year!

We certainly have cause for celebration - in Paris, world leaders agreed to cap global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius, a level that will help prevent the most catastrophic changes from our warming climate. Here at home, our new government seems determined to have Canada be a leader, not a laggard, in the global fight against climate change.

Our new Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, invited Canadians to share ideas for fighting climate change so we created a video to show her one way our community of Salt Spring is reducing carbon footprint and generating renewable energy to meet important goals. The solar panels on the GISS roof have been performing above expectations and the second solar scholarship will be awarded in 2016.

We launched the Solar Scholarship project nearly two years ago at the 2014 Renewable Energy Conference. Also at that conference, we introduced attendees to solar hot water, heat pumps, several models of electric vehicles (EVs), as well as e-bikes and trikes. Today, with over 60 fully electric vehicles on the island, we are likely the EV capital of Canada!

We’ve made progress, yet there are so many more opportunities to take advantage of! It's time we get together to share news on our latest project and many other possibilities benefiting homeowners and businesses alike. We are therefore organizing the 2016 Community Energy Conference to be held Saturday April 23rd at GISS. There will be knowledgeable speakers and over a dozen workshops with practical solutions we can take advantage of now.

To help celebrate Earth Day this year, we will have an educational film the preceding evening Friday April 22nd. Details and venue to be announced in a future newsletter.

So mark your calendars for Friday and Saturday April 22nd and 23rd, 2016 for this not to be missed event. See you there!
